After having to leave several other shelters, Robert Allen Simons went into hiding with the Schot* family in Hupsel, Gelderland. While he was hiding on their family farm, the German authorities, who used the local coffee shop as their main office, became increasingly suspicious of the Schots. On several occasions, Robert was forced to move temporarily to the nearby farm run by the SchotsÂ’ daughter, Harmina (Mina), and her husband, Gerrit-Jan Hulshof. Gerrit-Jan and Mina had no children of their own and cared for Robert lovingly.
On June 6, 1993, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit-Jan Hulshof and his wife, Harmina Aleida Hulshof-Schot, as Righteous Among the Nations.
