Hendrik Huizing of Arnhem, Gelderland, began his Resistance activities very early on in the war and he soon became a central figure in the rescue of the persecuted Jews in his hometown, the surrounding area, and eastern Holland. In 1942, the three Noot children---ten-year-old Moshe and his sister, three-year-old Naomi, and brother Ab---were left in distress after their father, the cantor of the small Jewish community in Borculo, Gelderland, was deported, followed shortly afterwards by their mother. Various people helped take care of the orphaned children but it was Hendrik who played the major role in ensuring their well-being. When Hendrik heard that the forest where Moshe (later Ben Zvi), was hiding was about to be raided by the Germans, he took the boy by night to a hiding place with the de Goede* family in Borculo. After moving to several other addresses, Hendrik eventually arranged a permanent hideout for Moshe in the north of Holland. Hendrik also found a hiding place for Naomi with the farmer Gerben Tiedema*. She stayed with him until the liberation. During the war, Hendrik and his colleagues were responsible for the rescue of about 50 Jews, 40 percent of whom were from the local community. David Colthof and his wife and another Jewish couple hid with Hendrik and his wife, Christine, from March 1943 until June 1944. The house was searched, but fortunately the hidden Jews had already left. Hendrik was also involved in an attack on a ration coupon distribution office to get cards for the hidden Jews. He arranged for a doctor to treat the sick son of Mr. and Mrs. Heymans, who were in hiding. Hendrik and his wife were simply dedicated to rescuing Jews by any means possible. When the war was over, Hendrik tried to return the hidden children to Jewish foster families, and the Colthofs took them in.
On November 11, 1969, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik Huizing, as Righteous Among the Nations.
