At that point, they decided that it would be safer for him to go into hiding elsewhere. The Kropvelds made contact with Pieter and Jeanne van Houwelingen of Bergen op Zoom, North Brabant. They agreed to shelter Eliezer, who was given the name Peter. In July 1943, Eliezers parents were seized and deported to Auschwitz. Pieter, a mold maker at a steel factory, and Jeanne were childless. Their two babies had died shortly after being born. They had often served as temporary foster parents for children whose parents could not look after them. They were known for this and thus it was natural to ask them to hide a Jewish infant and it was credible for them to tell people that the new arrival was just another foster child. Pieter and Jeanne did not wish to receive any financial support from the Resistance because they considered their actions to be their Christian duty. In September 1944, Bergen op Zoom became a frontline town. A Canadian bomb hit the Houwelingens house and destroyed the upper half. Jeanne had taken Eliezer out of his carriage just minutes before the bomb hit it. Following this incident, the couple fled to Zeeland with Eliezer, where they had a difficult time. The most difficult moment for Pieter and Jeanne was when the war was over and they had to return Eliezer, to whom they had become very attached. In August 1945, three-year-old Eliezer was handed over to his uncle, David Salomon Kropveld. After Pieters death Eliezer regularly visited Jeanne. On May 19, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter van Houwelingen and his wife, Jeanne van Houwelingen-Lippe, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
