She told them that if they were interested, she could help them hide. After weighing the pros and cons of such a move, the Kools decided to accept her offer and send their two children into hiding. In December 1942, Elly Katherina, then four years old, was taken to live with the in 't Houts in Laren, North Holland. Pieter and Helena in 't Hout had two daughters aged five and two, and Elly was treated like a third daughter. When their son was born, all Elly knew was that she had a new brother. Initially Elly was taught at home, but then arrangements were made for her to attend school and soon, though it was risky, she was allowed to play outside with other children. Pieter and Helena did everything in their power to make her childhood as normal as possible. After the liberation, Elly's father and brother joined her at the in 't Houts' home until her father was able to move into his own home in October 1946. Pieter also helped other Jews, in 1944 and 1945, taking on the responsibility of providing ration cards for those in hiding in Almelo and Amersfoort and helping several Jews from Amsterdam and Hilversum make it safely to hiding places in Blaricum. On May 23, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter in 't Hout and his wife, Helena Catharina in 't Hout-Noorda, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
