One of her brothers was a member of the Resistance and persuaded Johanna, who was divorced with one son, to join him. Herbert was not the only boy to hide in the childrens home; two other Jewish boys of about the same age also lived there. One of them was Robert (Bob) Neeter, who moved to Australia after the war. Johannas son and the three boys, who had false papers, shared everything, living like brothers, and went to school together in Hillegom. When the Germans ordered all the residents of Noordwijk to evacuate the coastal plain, they were all forced to move inland and Johanna took the four boys to live in an apartment in Heemstede, North Holland, for six months, after which they moved to nearby Bennebroek. Herbert lived with Johanna for three years, even after the money his father provided for his maintenance ran out. Herbert and his mother testified that Johannas motives were both patriotic and humantarian, and Herbert called her behavior heroic. On March 29, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Johanna Maria Hoogstraten-Romijn as Righteous Among the Nations. |
