In March 1943, the constabulary of Grootegast, Groningen, and the surrounding villages refused to obey an order to arrest seven Jews. One of those who refused was Geert Holvast of Grootegast, who was punished for his noncompliance by deportation to the Vught concentration camp, where he spent a year, after which he was transferred to Germany as a prisoner of war. Shortly after the German capitulation, he was repatriated. Police sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who had initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau.
On November 14, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Geert Holvast as Righteous Among the Nations.
