One of those who refused was Geert Holvast of Grootegast, who was punished for his noncompliance by deportation to the Vught concentration camp, where he spent a year, after which he was transferred to Germany as a prisoner of war. Shortly after the German capitulation, he was repatriated. Police sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who had initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau. On November 14, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Geert Holvast as Righteous Among the Nations. |
