Douwe and Janke Hofstra, in their thirties, warmly welcomed Isaac and Edith into their home although Janke was in the final weeks of her pregnancy. The Hofstra couple did their utmost to make the Cohens’ stay as comfortable as possible. Isaac and Edith received a small room, six by nine feet, on the top floor and had to stay there during the day, only coming downstairs in the evening. An alarm system with a bell was rigged up to warn them of danger, in which case they crept into a hiding place. Douwe and Janke only charged a small amount for their upkeep and managed to conceal the presence of extra people in the house from friends, neighbors, and family. Douwe and Janke were also involved in Resistance activity, and their home was used as a transit point for Jews in need. In the summer of 1944, the Germans searched their house. Douwe was arrested but freed on the same day, due to lack of evidence. In the autumn of that year, the house became too dangerous and, on the advice of Resistance members, Isaac and Edith left and moved to another hiding place. In their testimony, the Cohens ascribed their survival to the Hofstras and their help. The two couples maintained regular contact even after the war. On October 2, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Douwe Hofstra and his wife, Janke Hofstra-de Haan, as Righteous Among the Nations.
