In August 1942, Abraham Tof, his wife, Johanna (formerly Wolf), and their one-and-a-half-year-old son, Moritz, who were living in Heerenveen, Friesland, realized that they were in danger of being deported. Thus, they took all their precious possessions, including silver and porcelain, to the Overdieps*, who lived in their neighborhood, for fear that they would be confiscated. The Overdieps were not the only ones concerned about the fate of their Jewish fellow citizens. On the initiative of Jan de Jong*, whom Abraham Tof barely knew, Abraham went into hiding on the very day he was ordered to report for deportation to Westerbork. Jan and his son took Abraham to Sijtske van der Spoel*, a widow living near Heerenveen in Bovenknipe/Meibos with her two sons and a granddaughter, and rumors were deliberately spread that Abraham had fled to England. Hiding some of Heerenveen’s other Jews became a complex operation coordinated by Dr. Harm Hofkamp, a veterinarian and well-known Resistance member. The Tofs, their son, Johanna’s sister Mies Nieweg, and her baby daughter Sara were just some of those rescued with Harm’s help. He took Johanna and Moritz to Sijtske van der Spoel’s house, where Johanna stayed while Moritz was taken to hide with the Banga* family. Harm knew all the farmers in the district through his work and asked them about hiding places. He also had a car and participated in the Resistance’s raid on the ration card distribution office in Joure, which was ten kilometers from Heerenveen. Harm was arrested twice by the Germans in connection with his various illegal activities, which also included involvement with British forces.
On November 24, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Harm Steven Hofkamp as Righteous Among the Nations.
