In 1942, an underground worker brought eight-year-old Ulrich Denneboom to the home of Jan and Grietje Hoffman in Hengelo, Overijssel. The Hoffmans' teenage daughters, Annie and Aat, taught the boy reading, writing, and arithmetic. For three years, Ulrich remained hidden in the house, unable to go outside. Because of the lack of exercise, he suffered from poorly developed muscles and had trouble walking. Whenever someone came to visit the Hoffman household, the boy was hidden. Ulrich remained with the family until 1948, having learned that both of his parents died in death camps. He was then placed in a Jewish children's home.
On March 22, 1998, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Hoffman and his wife, Grietje Alida Hoffman-Davenschot, as Righteous Among the Nations.
