In August 1942, Piet Brandsen* of Amersfoort, offered Curt a shelter with the van der Hoevens in his hometown. Piet arranged for the couple to get married on September 3, 1942, and then they sheltered with the van der Hoevens until April 27, 1945. The van der Hoevens were devout Calvinists who believed it was their God-given duty to save Jews. Jacobus and Gezina, known as Sinchen, both teachers, also hid non-Jews who for various reasons were seeking refuge from the Germans. There were often around 14 people taking shelter in their home. Sinchen would buy provisions from several shops, sometimes as many as ten. She was especially resourceful in obtaining a variety of foods and even prepared special dishes for the Jewish high holidays, in particular for Jette Levi, Nellys mother, who was Orthodox. Jacobus and Sinchen were always considerate towards their Jewish guests. Staying at the van der Hoevens home was not always easy. Their son, Gerhard, who was employed in Berlin, returned home an antisemite and demanded that all the Jews be thrown out of the house. Jacobus refused to do so. On April 27, the Germans ordered all the residents of Amersfoort to evacuate their homes. Mr. van der Hoeven (Sr.) broke down and cried on hearing this news. At five oclock in the morning, the van der Hoevens and their guests left the house with their essential belongings loaded onto baby carriages and handcarts. They returned to Amersfoort on May 5, when the whole country was liberated. On October 22, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus van der Hoeven and his wife, Gezina (Sinchen) van der Hoeven, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
