A Jewish family of six spent much of the war hidden in a tiny underground cellar where Cornelis van der Hoef looked after them. Philip Alter, his wife, their two children, aged six and nine, and Philip’s elderly father and mother-in-law had had to leave their former hiding place at short notice. They were taken by Resistance worker Theo Stevens* to the woods and later to an underground shelter beneath a workshop owned by Cornelis van der Hoef in Nunspeet, Gelderland. Despite the fact that German soldiers were billeted in his own home, Cornelis took it upon himself to look after the hidden Jews, helped by Theo Stevens, who supplied food coupons and other necessities. The Alter family stayed for two and a half years in the cellar, where they could not even stand up straight. A wooden hatch on which work tools were placed closed off the entrance to the shelter. Near the entrance to the shelter, there were some cages containing rabbits and Cornelis would feed them every day, which gave him a pretext to enter the shelter. The ventilation ducts to the cellar were also carefully hidden. At first, there was electricity and light, but after the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 the current was cut and the fugitives had to use candles. They spent many hours of their confinement reading and playing games. When Philip’s father became seriously ill, it was impossible to find a doctor who could care for him in his hiding place and he died. He was buried according to Jewish law under the roof of the building where they were hidden. After the war, his remains were transferred to a Jewish cemetery.
On July 29, 1968, Yad Vashem recognized Cornelis Wouter Marinus van der Hoef as Righteous Among the Nations.
