Maarten and Antje Hiemstra lived in the village of Marum, which was part of the Opsterland community situated near Drachten in southeast Friesland. The entire region later became known for the many Jews that the local population rescued during the war. Maarten and Antje hid Gerda Weijl-van der Stam for six weeks, treating her very well and never asking for payment.
On May 28, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Maarten Hiemstra and his wife, Antje Hiemstra-Tjeedsma, as Righteous Among the Nations.
