Piet, a railway worker, and his family lived in a small house. Although his weekly salary was only 25 florins (and by the end of the war a loaf of bread cost fifteen florins), he and Mijntje received hardly any money towards Judy's upkeep, but would have looked after her anyway for nothing. Mijntje was always ready to help wherever she could. She took food to people in need, carried messages, and intervened in emergencies. Her daughter, Johanna, who was only seven years old, understood that Judy was Jewish and that she had to keep quiet about it, which she did for two long years. For a while, the Heuzers also hid Judy's mother. At another time, they hid her grandfather. However, one of the neighbors was a collaborator and had already betrayed several families to the Germans, and so eventually Judy had to leave, moving to the te Gussinklos*. On February 26, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Heuzer, his wife, Willemijntje Heuzer-Heemsbergen as Righteous Among the Nations. |
