In May 1944, when they were forced to leave the Huybooms*, Max and Eduard Cohen went to the Herkes family in Haarlem, where they were immediately taken in. Theodoor and Hillegonda Herkes, who had two young sons, refused to take any money for their upkeep and were extraordinarily kind, treating the youngsters very well. Soon afterwards the Allies invaded France and the Germans became more and more alert in the coastal areas. Johanna Oskam*, who felt responsible for the Cohen brothers, decided to move them to a hiding place in Amsterdam, although Theodoor and Hillegonda were sorry to see them go.
On September 21, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Theodoor Leonardus Gerardus Herkes and his wife, Hillegonda Herkes-van Dijk, as Righteous Among the Nations.
