It would have been too dangerous to hide the fugitives in their home, so Teunis and Anna used the chicken coops in their backyard as a shelter. Hiding Jews was especially risky, particularly since there were many house searches and also because the Germans were offering a fl. 7.50 reward to Dutch people who turned in Jews. Nevertheless, the Hendriksens succeeded in hiding these three fugitives until February 17, 1944, when they were betrayed. The fugitives immediately fled to the surrounding woods and the Hendriksens were interrogated by the Gestapo for a couple of hours, but not arrested. During the war, Teunis was generally active in the Resistance, he hid other Jews in his home besides the three mentioned above. Prince Bernhard honored him for this after the war. Teunis and Anna were devout Catholics, but they respected the faith of those they hid and never tried to convert them. On January 3, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Teunis Hendriksen and his wife, Anna Hendriksen-van Hardeveld, as Righteous Among the Nations.
