Hendriks and Brouwer developed a system whereby even these new documents could be duplicated. They formed a network throughout the Netherlands that instructed cooperative town council members in the new technique and thus saved many lives. Dolf, an engineer by profession, also established a nationwide organization, the TD, which produced thousands of false ID cards for both Jews and non-Jews during the last year of the war. The Germans never caught the principal figures in the TD, a group of about 25 individuals, and they all survived the war. Over and above this work, Dolf was also actively involved in trying to save Jews. On July 13, 1942, he escorted Rudolf Pool and his brothers by train from Arnhem to a hideout with the Timmermanses*, in Zutphen, Gelderland. Dolf also assisted Rudolf and his brothers by providing them with false identity cards, which enabled them to work and to move around freely. Even before the war, Dolf was vehemently anti-fascist. From the day that German anti-Jewish regulations went into force, Dolf actively resisted them. He helped find safe addresses for fugitives and assisted people hiding Jews by providing food and clothing. Dolf energetically supported the railroad strike, which lasted from after the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 until the end of the war. (The Dutch Railways later honored him for this effort.) After the war, Dolf and his group refused to accept any honors. They believed that they were simply following the dictates of their consciences. On February 11, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Prof. Dr. Adolph Hendriks as Righteous Among the Nations. |
