During the war, Machteld van Hardenbroek was a student and a member of one of the first Resistance groups, established by Dr. Johan Brouwer* in Utrecht. Through this group, Machteld became involved in the attack on the population registry in Amsterdam. Among other functions, Machteld worked as a courier, delivering food stamps and forged papers. He also escorted people to hiding places, including Kitty (Sara) Rijnveld. Machteld picked up Kitty from the local train station and arranged a safe overnight stop for her in Utrecht. The next day, they cycled together to the “log cabin” in Laren, where Kitty stayed in hiding with Dr. Willem Maillet de Buy Wenniger* and Wilhelmina (Miny) Filz-te Winkel*.
On April 12, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Machteld van Hardenbroek as Righteous Among the Nations.
