Jacob Coppenhagen of Amsterdam had known the Reverend Alderse-Baas* since his school days. In 1942, when the persecution of Dutch Jewry was intensified, Jacob turned to Alderse-Baas for help. Alderse-Baas was connected with the Resistance and arranged a safe shelter for Jacob with Johannes and Johanna (Annie) Helleman, a young couple from Amsterdam. In addition to Jacob, during the war the Hellemans also hid a mother and daughter, Jewish refugees from Germany who were later arrested and sent to the camps. Johannes Helleman was a clerk in a shop and was willing to hide Jews even if they were unable to contribute towards their upkeep. When Dutch Nazis (NSB) moved into the same apartment block as the Hellemans, Jacob felt compelled to seek a new hideout. He wandered around the city but was unable to find a safe address and so he returned to the Hellemans. After awhile, Johannes was called up for forced labor in Germany and had to go into hiding himself. Jacob was again forced to leave the shelter, but this time he found refuge in a school where he had worked as a teacher and for which he still had the keys. While he was there, Alderse-Baas supported him. In the meantime, Johannes and Annie had fled to Friesland, where they were active in the Resistance. The members of Annie's family who had been involved in the Resistance were all rounded up and died in the camps.
On November 28, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Helleman and his wife, Johanna Jacoba Helleman-Knöbel, as Righteous Among the Nations.
