In the 1930s, the Gerrards (formerly Graetz), of Jewish background turned Protestant, fled from Germany to Holland. They had two children, Anna Maria, born on March 25, 1941, and Thomas Frank Henri, born September 7, 1942. In 1943, Mrs. Gerrard, born a Jew, was arrested and taken to the Vught concentration camp, from where she was moved to Theresienstadt. Mr. Gerrard, whose first wife had not been Jewish, was listed by the Germans as being in a mixed marriage and left untouched until early 1945, when he was taken to Westerbork. In June 1943, Renske Koster, a Resistance worker, took nine-month-old Thom to Dr. Anton Heering and his wife, Jacoba, in the city of Utrecht. They afforded the child shelter until the end of the war. Thom, who had blond hair and blue eyes, was given the name Robje and fitted naturally into the Heering family because they were recently married and could conceivably have had an infant his age. In the meantime, Anna Maria was taken to the ten Hoves*, also in Utrecht, where she survived the war. The Heerings, acting for humanitarian reasons, also helped a Jewish woman, Mrs. Sabine Birnbaum, in the winter of 1943--1944, when she was hiding in a house in Utrecht and suffering from malnutrition. The Heerings invited her over to their home once a week for dinner, at a time when everyone in Holland had a hard time getting enough food for a decent meal. Sabine survived the war and lived for several years afterwards.
On March 20, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Anton Hendrik Heering and his wife, Jacoba Heering-ten Bosch, as Righteous Among the Nations.
