In the fall of 1943, Trijntje van Heerde, a young widow with five young children, was living in Broek op Langendijk, North Holland. Despite her difficult family situation, she warmly welcomed two Jewish sisters, Klara and Sarah Elte, into her home. The siblings, aged 21 and 22 at the time, arrived from Amsterdam, but were originally from Den Helder. They hid principally with the de Krijger* family but they were compelled to spend a five-month interim period with Trijntje van Heerde when their hideout with the de Krijgers became unsafe. For similar reasons, they had to leave Trijntje, where their stay had been pleasant and they had been treated very cordially.
On May 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Trijntje van Heerde-Dekker as Righteous Among the Nations.
