In the summer of 1941, a number of German officers were killed in Hengelo, Overijssel. In reprisal, the local police, under orders from the German authorities, arrested 11 prominent citizens and sent them to Mauthausen, where they were executed. Among the victims was the Jewish banker Abram Kats who lived with his family in the bank building. Before the Germans entered his home, his wife, Sientje (Tsippora), had managed to take their children, seven-and-a-half-year-old Ruth and five-year-old Bert, to a non-Jewish family who lived nearby and then to go into hiding herself. Since the children were well known in the neighborhood and would be easily identified if they stayed near their home, they had to be relocated. A servant girl, Gerharda (Gerda) Haveman (later Vrugteveen), who was working for the family where Ruth and Bert had been left but who lived in Hengelo, offered to shelter the Jewish children. The Haveman family warmly received Ruth and Bert into their home and cared for them lovingly. Gerda even obtained schoolbooks for Ruth and she maintained a line of communication between the children and their mother. Gerda and her parents regarded it as their duty as strict Reformed Christians to rescue persecuted children. They felt rewarded by their success. After six months, the true identity of Ruth and Bert, who had been using false names, was discovered. Because of the danger of being found, Gerda personally accompanied them to another hideout with Marten and Riek Huisman* who lived between Enschede and Glanerburg.
On April 8, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Geert Haveman, his wife, Hendrika Haveman, and their daughter, Gerharda Gerritdina Vrugteveen-Haveman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
