They crossed the border to Holland and settled in Amsterdam, where they met several Jews, including Nijkerk, whom Hanna married. Among Hanna's Jewish friends were the two Kets de Vries brothers, one of whom was married to a non-Jewish girl, Henriette (Henny) Kets de Vries-Houtman. Her father, Florian Houtman, had been living in Germany since he was young and had married and had two daughters there. The family then returned to Holland in the mid-thirties, and both daughters married Jewish men. All the Houtmans were anti-Nazi and their fluent German helped them deceive the German occupiers. Henny was a dedicated Resistance activist. When Nathan's life was in danger, Henny took the 13-year-old boy from Blaricum to her parents, who lived in Huizen, North Holland. Florian and Emilie Houtman lived in an old farmhouse with many hiding places. They gave permanent shelter to six Jews: their son-in-law, van Amerongen, his parents, his sister and her husband, and Nathan. Twice, this shelter had to be evacuated when they were betrayed, and Nathan was taken to stay with Henny, who also lived in Huizen. Nathan recalled that the Houtmans took him in without any kind of financial arrangement simply out of humanitarian principles. Florian, Emilie, and Henny hid other Jewish fugitives and Nathan testified that sometimes ten Jews were hidden in different "corners" of the big house. On February 18, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Florian Houtman and his wife, Emilie Houtman-Kretchmer, and their daughter Kets de Vries-Houtman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
