Hattum and Gessien Hattuma, who had two sons living at home feigning illness to avoid forced labor in Germany, were prewar patients of Dr. Alfred Löwenberg and they offered to help him should the need arise. Thus, Alfred and Kathe Löwenberg, in their twenties during the occupation, found shelter with Hattum and Geessien in Groningen from July 10, 1942, until April 17, 1945. Initially, Alfred just took the key to the Hattumas’ home and used it several times when he was fleeing SS raids. However, on July 10, 1942, the SS issued an order for the Jewish male population of Groningen to report for deportation to labor camps and, instead, Alfred and his wife moved into the Hattumas’ home permanently. From the outset, the Löwenbergs informed the Hattumas of their meager financial situation and their inability to contribute towards their upkeep. The Hattumas brushed this obstacle aside and willingly provided for the fugitive couple throughout the war, generously and hospitably. Alfred and Kathe were given a comfortable room in the house where they felt safe. Special hiding arrangements were made for them in case of danger; this alternative was used twice when SS guards raided the house, but they did not discover anything. Hattum, who was an agent for a coffee, tea, and tobacco distributing company, used the supplies available to him as currency on the black market, thereby being able to provide his family and his wards with food. This was especially useful because the Löwenbergs had no food coupons. The Hattumas shared all the food they obtained equally with their guests.
On December 03, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Hattum Hattuma and his wife, Geessien Hattuma-van der Woude, as Righteous Among the Nations.
