All three worked in the laboratory of a dental technician named Gotje. The three were also among the editors of Rattenkruid (a militant illegal publication advocating armed resistance). They called themselves the Rattenkruidjongens and responded enthusiastically when older Resistance activists Willem Arondeus* and Gerrit van der Veen* asked to join them. Together with Henri Halberstadt, a Jew who also worked for Gotje, this group participated in the daring attack on the Municipal Population Registration Office in Amsterdam on March 27, 1943. Coos was among the nine men who entered the population registration building and burned files and then blew up the place. He was arrested on April 8 in a guesthouse where he was hiding with Groeger and Bloemgarten. Coos was tried on June 18 and sentenced to death. He was executed on July 1, 1943. The Queen of the Netherlands posthumously awarded the Resistance Memorial Cross to the entire group of Resistance fighters who had been involved in this plot. On June 19, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Coos Hartogh as Righteous Among the Nations. |
