Piet worked in a food distribution office and so he was in a position to steal food stamps, both for direct use and for forging. With 25 ration cards in his possession, he could produce around 400 new points with which he could put together 300 complete ration cards for the hidden refugees with whom he was in contact. Among the people he assisted were allied pilots, Jews, and students. In addition to supplying people in hiding and their hosts with food and clothing, he also maintained lines of communication between those in hiding and their close relatives. Piet also secured addresses for Jews and non-Jews in need of shelter. He was able to provide these fugitives with false identity cards that were produced from discarded birth certificates belonging to newborn babies. Making forgeries such as these involved the risk of severe punishment by the SD. On March 30, 1945, German soldiers in a passing vehicle shot Piet. The following day, he died of his wounds. On January 16, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Hartog as Righteous Among the Nations. |
