When the hideout there became unsafe, Rem Aten arranged for her to move to the Harts, who lived in the same city. Willem and Lena Hart were devout Calvinists whose social lives were centered around the church and who were governed by their staunch principles of respect for human life and freedom. Once relocated to the Harts' home, Eva was provided with false documents and employed by Willem and Lena as a nursemaid for their two-month-old baby. Willem and Lena were adamantly anti-Nazi and fully aware of the risks involved in hiding a Jew, yet they still treated her well and insisted on paying her a full salary. Eva was free to roam about on her day off and often journeyed by train to Amsterdam to visit friends. On one train ride, the German police arrested Eva. She was unable to destroy some papers that connected her to the Harts. The Harts, unaware of what had happened to Eva, were nevertheless concerned for their own safety and went into hiding for a few months. Lena was pregnant at the time. Eva was taken to Theresienstadt. She survived the war and returned to the Harts eight months after it ended. They offered her a bedroom in their home, which she accepted temporarily before moving to Israel. On May 16, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Willem Hart and his wife, Lena Catharina Hart-Duijs, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
