Cecile Hanedoes was active in the underground involved in distributing false identity cards and food coupons and finding shelter for Jewish fugitives. She hid Karel Poons in her own home in Huizen, North Holland, from July 28, 1942, until the liberation. When the war broke out, Karel was a ballet dancer in the company of Yvonne Georgi, a famous German dancer and choreographer who was married to the Dutch critic and conductor L. M. G. Arntzenius. Karel was able to stay with the company until August 1941. Later, he was ordered to move to the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam and decided to go into hiding instead. It was Mascha ter Weeme, a friend and soloist in the company, who eventually obtained Cecile’s address from Resistance worker J. Bokma. Initially, Karel was using the identity of the company’s pianist, Wim de Soet, but Cecile was able to organize better papers for him, giving him the identity of her cousin, Willem Karel Hanedoes. With these papers, Karel could live as normally as possible considering the situation. Cecile’s friends and neighbors were told that he had come to live with her in her beautiful villa because his home in The Hague had been bombed. There was an excellent hiding place in Cecile’s home and whenever there was a search Karel entered it and was never detected. For some time, Josefine (Jos) de Vries, the daughter of Karel’s sister, Marianne de Vries-Poons, was also hidden in Cecile’s home. In his testimony to Yad Vashem, Karel recalled that one day, despite being sick, Cecile received a phone call and immediately traveled to Amsterdam on her bicycle with wooden tires to collect a bag full of false identity papers.
On May 24, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Cecile Charlotte Caroline Hanedoes as Righteous Among the Nations.
