The morning after Kristallnacht in 1938, her mother sent her away on the first children's transport to Holland. After moving between a number of addresses, Flora was taken in by the family of Rabbi Solomon Rodrigues Pereira in Hilversum. In the winter of 1942--1943, the Resistance placed Flora with Jacob (Fokke) and Klasiena Hamstra in Kootsterstill, Friesland. She became a member of the family, helping to take care of the young children and sometimes serving in the bakery. She was given the name Truus de Jong and, for the outside world, the story that she had come from Limburg, where there was not enough food to survive. Initially, the Resistance provided the Hamstras with financial assistance and ration cards. Flora had to go to church with the family every Sunday morning and afternoon. In times of danger, she was sent to stay with Fokke Hamstra's mother in Veenwouden or with other relatives. During the war, the Hamstras also hid two non-Jewish men, one of whom was Fokke's brother, Thijs, who had refused to go to Germany as a laborer. On one occasion, when all the houses in the neighborhood were due to be searched, Klasiena put a quarantine sign for diphtheria on the door and told Flora to lie in bed with her hair wrapped in a kerchief. All the houses were searched except theirs. After the war, the Hamstras sent Flora to high school and she was reunited with Rabbi Pereira, who took her with him to Hilversum until she could join her father in England. On July 9, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Jacob Hamstra and his wife, Klasiena Hamstra-Hofman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
