As members of the Dutch Reformed Church, a strict Calvinist denomination, Jaap and his wife were motivated by deep religious feelings in their opposition to the Nazi regime and considered it their Christian duty to help others. As a typographer, Jaap served the underground in preparing the underground Trouw newspaper for print. In addition, Jaap was active in saving Jews. In 1943, Salomon Gazan and his wife, Sara Gazan-Canes, found a hiding place in the home of the de Haans. The Gazan daughter, Henny, born in 1923, was hiding somewhere else and Jaap saved her life on two different occasions. In 1944, when word came that the family with whom she was hiding might have been betrayed, Jaap took her on his bicycle to another address straight across the city. Ten days later, when the coast was clear, Henny was again accompanied by Jaap on her way back through the city to her hiding place. This last trip was especially dangerous as it was on Whitsunday when religious Calvinists are not supposed to be using their bikes. Jaap nevertheless took her by bike, protecting her while exposing himself. The de Haans had a three-year-old daughter, Thea, yet they endangered their lives for others, obtaining and distributing food coupons for hiders in other places and for their own. Anna de Haan used to distribute the food coupons riding a bicycle with her little girl perched on a seat in the back. On January 29, 1945, Jaap was arrested and on February 9 executed. When that happened, the Gazans had to leave immediately, much to Anna's distress. Anna never recovered from the loss of her husband, even though the Gazans were a constant source of support for her and her daughter for many years. On March 30, 2000, Yad Vashem recognized Jacob Isaac de Haan and Anna Christina Haan de-De Kwant, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
