Lambertus and Jannetje de Groot lived on a small farm on the edge of the Amstelveenscheweg in Amsterdam with their five children. On the farm, the de Groots grew vegetables and had about 20 cows. When the persecution of the Jews began, the de Groots immediately offered their farm as a hideout, sheltering many Jews and two non-Jews. Manfred Wolf testified that on the day of the liberation, nine Jews and two non-Jews emerged unharmed from the de GrootsÂ’ farm. They had all been hidden there for a long period of time. Wolf added that others had hidden there for shorter periods during the course of the war. Lambertus and Jannetje were pious Calvinists and, as such, they considered helping Jews an important duty. They knew the risks involved but their religious principles overcame their fears. The de Groots cared excellently for the people they were hiding. Lambertus even gave his own woolen underwear to one of the hidden fugitives who fell ill. One of the de GrootsÂ’ major problems was how to feed all the members of their extended household. They managed to provide some produce from their own farm and some relatives supplied them with extra vegetables, unaware that these were not entirely for the consumption of the de Groots. After the war, in 1955, the farm had to be liquidated due to the expansion of Amsterdam. The de Groots decided to immigrate to Canada with four of their children and two adopted orphans.
On June 28, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Lambertus Hendrikus de Groot and his wife, Jannetje de Groot-de Vries, as Righteous Among the Nations.
