Pietertje (Nel) Groen was a member of a group of Resistance workers in Apeldoorn, Gelderland. The group, which also included Arend Smit* and Aart van den Brink*, rescued 100 Jews from Amsterdam, 60 of whom hid in Apeldoorn. In Apeldoorn, some refugees, including Heinz and Ruth Lewitz, hid in Nel's parent's home. Nel was instrumental in transferring fugitives from Amsterdam to Apeldoorn. The task of accompanying people was often given to women because they ran less risk of being apprehended by the Germans than young men, who were being rounded up and sent to Germany for forced labor.
On January 29, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Pietertje Johanna Groen and her parents, Dirk Groen and Antje Groen-Buijtelaar, as Righteous Among the Nations.
