Geertruida (Truus) Gorka was a member of the anti-fascist International Red Help group, an organization that aided political refugees. She was also a member of the Communist Party and was especially outraged by the persecution of the Jews. Floris te Groen*, to whom Truus was married in 1941 but later divorced, was a well-known Amsterdam-based Communist around the time of the war. In 1938, Floris rented a room in the house of the Emden family in Amsterdam, a Jewish couple with two daughters. Relations between the landlords and their tenant were friendly and were maintained even after Floris and Truus married. When the persecution of Jews intensified, Floris and Truus repeatedly offered the Emden family a hiding place in their small apartment, but the Jewish family was reluctant to accept. However, on May 22, 1943, after being arrested and then escaping, Bloeme Emden, the eldest daughter, finally agreed to go into hiding with Floris and Truus. She hid with them until it became too dangerous to remain there. At that point, a new hideout was found for her. Throughout the war, Floris and Truus were much involved in illegal work through the Communist Party. They published and distributed the De Waarheid ("The Truth") newspaper and their apartment served as a temporary haven for Jews as they waited for the Resistance to assign them permanent hideaways. In 1944, the Germans arrested Truus and she was imprisoned and tortured. She was, at the time, in her ninth month of pregnancy and was released. Even after she gave birth she continued to work for the Resistance.
On April 26, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Geertruida Gorka as Righteous Among the Nations.
