They belonged to a strict Calvinist church and consequently felt obliged to protect "God's people." Thus, Elizabertus and Cornelia immediately agreed to hide Jews when they were approached by underground couriers. In March 1943, Eduard Stibbe, then 36 years old, was brought to the Gravesteijns' home for shelter. Eduard, who used the name Willem Kalkhoven, stayed with the Gravesteijns until the liberation in May 1945. He contributed to the Gravesteijns' expenses until his money ran out. Over and above sheltering fugitives, the Gravesteijns, including the eldest son, Paulus, who was 17 at the time, were involved with running underground errands and transmitting messages. The Gravesteijns persisted in their illegal activities despite the danger to their own lives. The relations between the Gravesteijn family and Eduard remained excellent even after the war. After Elizabertus and Cornelia passed away, Eduard stayed in touch with their children and a grandchild was even named after him. On November 24, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Elizabertus Cornelis Gravesteijn and his wife, Cornelia Aagje Gravesteijn-Roodzant, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
