In 1943, after having handed her children over to the underground so that they could be hidden, Deborah Feiwel was seized during a razzia in Amsterdam. She was taken to the Hollandsche Schouwburg, from where she was due to be sent to Westerbork. However, Deborah managed to escape and underground activists brought her to Menno and Maria (Marie) Goudberg in Waalwijk, North Brabant. Menno, the director of a local high school, and Marie, a kindergarten teacher, together with their ten-year-old daughter, warmly welcomed Deborah into their home. Deborah was given her own room. She remained with them until the end of the war. The Goudbergs’ food supplies became very limited, especially since Deborah did not have food coupons. Nevertheless, even during the harsh winter of 1944-1945, the Goudbergs shared the little provisions they did have with her. Menno and Marie felt compelled to help persecuted people. Their helping Deborah was especially dangerous because their neighbor was married to a German woman and had German soldiers residing in his home. Towards the end of the war, Deborah’s children were forced to leave their hideout and seek a new refuge. Menno and Marie kindly brought them into their home, where they remained until the end of the war.
On February 16, 1970, Yad Vashem recognized Menno Cornelis Goudberg and his wife, Maria Henriette Goudberg-van Grol, as Righteous Among the Nations.
