On May 24, 1943, Roosje and Sally Kesnar and their three sons were arrested and brought to the Hollandsche Schouwburg to await deportation, while their infant son, eight-month-old Joseph, was put in the crèche across the street. Dr. Maria Nolte, who taught at the Haarlem Catholic school for girls, Sancta Maria, was involved in the rescue of Jewish children from this crèche. Senior students, including Grada (Ada) Goossens (later Warnaars) assisted her in her work. Grada smuggled little Joseph out of the crèche and took him to a pre-arranged hiding place. On arriving at the address, Grada felt it was unsafe and she, therefore, took Joseph to her parents' home in Haarlem, North Holland. Jacobus and Hendrina Goossens, who already had five children of their own, treated Joseph with love and affection. The two eldest Goosens children were called up for forced labor in Germany but went into hiding to avoid mobilization. The neighbors were told that the child was a nephew, evacuated from a war-stricken area. Later, the Goossenses sheltered Joseph's sister, Mietje, who was born in 1938. In January 1945, the Goossenses contacted former neighbors of Roosje and Sally Kesnar, the van Merle family, whose daughters came and took Mietje to stay with them in Amsterdam. Grada, who brought many other infants to safe houses, was motivated by a sense of justice and outrage at the persecution of Jews. Her mother, who had lost a baby in 1926, felt that Joseph was a kind of divine compensation. After the war, it became clear that Joseph's family had perished and the Goossenses applied for and were awarded guardianship of the boy. Joseph was baptized a Catholic in 1948, but in 1961 he returned to Judaism and in 1966 married a Jewish woman with the blessing of his foster parents.
On June 23, 1996, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus Henricus Goossens, his wife, Hendrina Cornelia Jospehina Goossens-van Grieken, and their daughter, Grada Josephina Warnaars-Goossens, as Righteous Among the Nations.
