Pastor Engelbert Gommans was approached in April 1943 by two underground activists from Venlo, who asked him to help hide fugitives in Sevenum. Gommans found much sympathy for his efforts among the local parishioners and found places for dozens of Jews in Sevenum. Gommans also took passport photographs for forged identity cards for, among others, the parents of Ruth Winter, who had been hiding in Sevenum with the Driessen* family. When Ruth was forced to leave the Driessens because of one of their Dutch Nazi neighbors, she was sheltered for about four days by Pastor Gommans until he secured a new hiding place for her with the Verhaags*.
On February 10, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Pastor Engelbert Michael Gommans as Righteous Among the Nations.
