Albert de Goede was a forestry department inspector for the region around Arnhem and lived with his wife, Margaretha (Gretha), in a house in the forest near Borculo, Gelderland. During the winter of 1944--1945, they rebuilt their attic so that it could accommodate seven Jews. It was ready when Hendrik Huizing* brought the Meir and Colthof couples to their home with the help of his friends Engbert Schuppert*, a merchant, and police officer Jan Wind*. Moving the couples was a very dangerous undertaking, especially since the de Goedes lived opposite known German collaborators, Germans and NSB members were on the lookout, and there was a Nazi plane flying above them looking for refugees with searchlights. However, the couples were brought over safely. Albert and Gretha hid the Meirs and the Colthofs for a year, along with three other Jews from Deventer. The Jews stayed in the attic, not even leaving to go to the bathroom but using a bucket for all their needs. They were allowed out at night to stretch their legs, but only for a short time. For three weeks, Albert and Gretha also hid ten-year-old Moshe, whose sister Naomi was hiding with the Tiedemas*. The de Goedes endangered their lives to rescue Jews without ever asking or receiving any monetary compensation.
On May 28, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Albert de Goede and his wife, Margaretha Elisa de Goede-van der Woude, as Righteous Among the Nations.
