On October 4, 1942, six-month-old Bertie Goslinski (later Levkowitz-Goslins) was taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emmelkamp in the city of Groningen. They were deeply involved in the Resistance and vowed to find a safe house for her. They took her to the home of Carl Gnirrep, a civil engineer, and his wife, Jane, and left her on their doorstep as arranged. In accordance with the plan that had been carefully prepared, the Emmelkamps pinned a note to the baby that read: “My name is Klaasje van de Velde. My mother can’t take care of me. Please take me in.” The Gnirreps, an elderly couple, treated Bertie like a granddaughter. Whenever a house search was expected, they temporarily moved her to another address, taking her back as soon as the danger subsided. In September 1944, Jane received a letter from Bertie’s parents telling her that they were going mad not being able to see their daughter. Jane, informed them that on a certain Saturday morning she would walk past their hiding place with Bertie in a carriage and that they would be able to see their child through the window. The plan was implemented and when Jane saw the parents’ eager faces peeping out from beneath the curtains of a second floor window, she gave in to a gentle-hearted impulse and took the baby into their hiding place for a brief visit. After the war, Bertie and her parents remained in close contact with Carl and Jane, who enjoyed watching Bertie grow up.
On July 9, 1997, Yad Vashem recognized Carl Gnirrep and his wife, Jane Gnirrep-Romberg, as Righteous Among the Nations.
