On February 23, 1943, Abraham Elzas found a hiding place for himself and his wife with the Hoogervorst* family but he still needed to find a shelter for his three daughters. Otto van Geytenbeek and his wife, Catharina, of Borculo, Gelderland, came forward and offered to take in the youngest daughter, Mary Estella, born in April 1941. The other daughters were given refuge by Henk and Cornelia Hoek* and Matthias and Gijsje Pliester*. Otto worked as a clerk for the local food distribution office. In this capacity, he could provide people with food coupons illegally. One of his "clients" was Hetty Voƻte* of the Utrecht Children's Committee, who sometimes came to him to exchange as many as 50 coupons for food to be distributed among families hiding Jewish children. In February 1944, close associates of Otto in the Resistance were killed and Otto had to go into hiding. Catharina fled with Mary to the city of Groningen, where they stayed until the end of the war in May 1945. Meanwhile, Otto went into hiding but was caught, arrested, and taken to a number of Dutch and German prison camps. He was finally freed in April 1945 from Bernau, near Chiemsee.
On February 6, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Otto van Geytenbeek and his wife, Catharina Jacoba van Geytenbeek-Pathuis, as Righteous Among the Nations.
