In the spring of 1943, a female member of the Utrecht Kindercomité (Utrecht Childrens Committee*) escorted Ruthie to a new hideout in the home of Lein and Luberta (Bep) Geschiere in Terneuzen, Zeeland. They were already hiding three other Jewish children, including Ruthie's brother. The couple could not bear to move her to another hiding place and their home became her permanent shelter. Ruthie stayed with them until the end of the war. Lein and Bep provided Ruthie with a warm and loving environment. Since being in hiding, she had never felt so welcome. The constant moving around before arriving at the Geschieres' home had unsettled Ruthie and she required a great deal of attention. During air raids, Ruthie would panic and Bep would calm her. In time, Ruthie regained her physical strength and began to feel safe. She shared clothing, toys, and a sleeping area with Els, the Geschiere's daughter, who was the same age as she. Ruthie was represented as a niece from The Hague whose impoverished parents could not take care of her. Her name was changed to Louise (Loejke) Jansen (Bep's maiden name). Lein and Bep helped people hide from the Germans out of compassion and a sense of duty. After the war, Ruthie's mother came to pick her up, but until Mrs. Salomon found a place to live, Ruthie remained with Lein and Bep. Ruth Salomon later moved to Israel, but she stayed in touch with the Geschiere family by mail. Thirty years after their separation, they met again when Lein and Bep visited Israel. On October 25, 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Lein Geschiere and his wife, Bep Geschiere-Jansen, as Righteous Among the Nations.
