In November 1942, Louis and Rina Pagrach went into hiding with the Jansen* family in Holten, Overijssel. Mr. Pagrach’s mother was hospitalized and his father had found a place to hide in Rijssen. When Mr. Pagrach, Sr., was forced to find a new hiding place, the Jansens said: “Where there is room for two, there is room for three!” The only person who knew that Jews were hiding with the Jansens was Dr. Gerrit Gerritsma, the Pagraches’ family doctor. He accompanied Mr. Pagrach, Sr., to the new address. In the middle of 1943, when Louis’s mother was looking for a new hideout, she too turned to the Jansens. “Where there is room for three, there is room for four,” they said. And Gerrit Gerritsma accompanied her to the Jansens’ home too. Gerrit remained in contact with the Pagraches until the liberation of Holten on April 8, 1945. Throughout their time in hiding, he helped the Jansens care for their Jewish wards.
On May 11, 1980, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Gerrit Gerritsma as Righteous Among the Nations.
