She worked in the Bijenkorf department store. Her best friend, Rudolf Richter, was among the Jewish men deported to Mauthausen in June 1941. Kiki was deeply shocked when she heard that he had died and so, when in early 1942 another Jewish friend, Leo Zwart, was ordered to move from Harderwijk, Gelderland, to Amsterdam, she offered to hide him in her home. In November 1942, Leo was arrested while walking in the streets. After being interrogated, he was deported to Westerbork. Kiki tried to help him escape, but when she arrived there, she learned that he had already been deported. Following this, the authorities followed Kiki for several weeks. In early 1943, Kikis friend and colleague Anna Maass asked Kiki if she would hide her Jewish friend Siegfried (Sieg) Goldsteen, who had escaped from one of the Jewish labor camps. Kiki offered him refuge in her home and stole ration cards from her employer to provide for him. A few weeks later, Kiki found a safer hideout for him. Some time afterwards Kiki moved to a larger apartment with a hiding place, and took in Judith Fransman, an acquaintance of Siegs. A friend at the distribution office took care of the additional ration cards. At the request of the Amsterdam Resistance, Kiki regularly traveled to Drenthe to pick up forged papers for people in hiding. Also, in May 1943, she took Isidore (Ies) Walvisch to a hideout in Meppel. In September 1943, when Sieg and Ies were in danger, Kiki took them back to Amsterdam together with Iess girlfriend, Judith. The whole operation was very dangerous, especially since the mens documents were poorly forged. In Amsterdam, Sieg went into hiding with Kiki and Ies found shelter with his future in-laws, from where he was liberated. On February 2, 1944, Kikis apartment was raided. Kiki and Sieg were taken away. Sieg perished somewhere in Central Europe in June 1944. Kiki was sent to Vught, Ravensbrück, and an Aussenkommando in Dachau, from where she was liberated on April 30, 1945. On September 15, 1989, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrika Jacoba Gerritsen-Heinsius as Righteous Among the Nations. |
