Wolf Dormits, his wife Marianna and their teenage daughters, Selma and Heintje, had been apprehended a number of times but had always been released afterward. Wolf had been the head of meat distribution in The Hague and in this capacity he was given preferential treatment. However, by the end of 1942 Wolf made contact with a police inspector active in the underground, who had already found a hiding place for Wolf's aunt and uncle with Johannes and Gerridina Geradts. He informed Wolf that they were willing to provide his family with refuge, too. In December 1942, the Dormits family arrived at the Geradtses' small house in The Hague. The Geradtses were a young couple; Gerridina was a midwife. They hid the fugitives, four adults and two children, in a little service area that was adjacent to the kitchen, at the back of the house. In the evenings, the fugitives came out of their hideout and into the house. An extra bell was installed by the front door to warn them when they were in the back rooms of the house that visitors were on their way. The underground supplied the Geradtses with extra food coupons and managed to provide meat from Wolf's former associates in the meat trade. In March 1943 both the families in hiding were discovered. Dutch policemen raided the house and arrested everybody. Johannes was taken to the Vught internment camp, where he remained for one year. He suffered physically from the hard labor he was forced to do there. Wolf's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. van Vollenhoven were transported to Auschwitz and did not return. Wolf and Marianna Dormits and their daughters were transported to Theresienstadt and later "exchanged" for medicine and brought to Switzerland. They returned to Holland after the war and have stayed in touch with the Geradtses thereafter.
On May 18, 1989, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Petrus Geradts and his wife, Gerridina Geradts-Krook, as Righteous Among the Nations.
