Salomon Wagenaar, a young Jewish boy who fled from his house in Amsterdam in October 1943, initially went to people he knew through his father's work connections. However, Salomon did not stay there long and, with the help of the LO, moved from place to place. He hid in a total of eight hideouts up to the liberation. Underground members helped him escape to Haarlem, then to Hillegom and, finally, to the town of Lemmer, Friesland. In Lemmer, the head of the LO, Dirk Onderweegs*, hid Salomon Wagenaar personally. After that, Salomon went to the Fokkema family, members of Dirk's group who lived in the village of Broek op Langedijk, North Holland. They hid him for two months, after which he moved to the Fedde van Dijk* family.
On June 18, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Meindert Fokkema and his wife, Baukjen Fokkema-Terpstra, as Righteous Among the Nations.
