In early 1943, Bendert and Johanna Fijma of Hillegom, South Holland, offered 21-year-old Maurits van Thijn shelter in their home. They treated him very well. In April of the same year, the contact who had arranged this and many other hideouts in the area betrayed all the Jews he had assisted. Fortunately, through the Kreeft* family, where Maurits’s fiancée, Catharina Blitz, was hiding, the Fijmas were warned and Maurits and Catharina fled to the Kranenburg* family.
On March 19, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Bendert Fijma and his wife, Johanna Fijma-Geljon, as Righteous Among the Nations.
