In 1942, Racheline de Leeuw, born in 1918, decided that she had to go into hiding. At first, a couple in the town where she was born, Winterswijk, Gelderland, took her in. A short time later a Protestant minister put her in touch with Reverend Frits Slomp, who took her by bicycle to his home in Heemse, Overijssel. The reverend's home was not a safe refuge. The Slomp family had a maid, Bertha van Faassen, whose uncle and aunt, Arend and Egbertina van Faassen, lived in nearby Lutten. Bertha suggested that Racheline would be safer with these relatives. In November 1943, Bertha's fiancé took the Jewish fugitive to the home of Arend and Egbertina. Racheline stayed with the van Faassens until the end of the war, apart from two short periods of exceptional danger when she hid with one of the van Faassen brothers and one of their friends. The van Faassens had a small factory where they produced wooden shoes. During the manufacturing process, small pieces of wood were discarded and these Arend brought home for Racheline, who painted them and sold them through Arend's brother's grocery in the village. In this way, she was able to contribute towards her upkeep. In addition to their own four children and Racheline, the van Faassens were also looking after four children who had been forced to leave Rotterdam. One of the children had tuberculosis and shared a bed with Racheline. After the war, Racheline maintained a warm friendship with her rescuers until Arend and Egbertina passed away.
On March 22, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Arend van Faassen and his wife, Egbertina Frederica van Faassen-Broekroelofs, as Righteous Among the Nations.
