Mozes and Sophia Bouwman started searching for a place to hide at the beginning of 1943 and in May of that year, thanks to Dirk Cornelis Bley*, they found refuge with the van Enks in the town of Oldebroek, Gelderland. Mozes and Sophia lived with Albert and Willempje van Enk under assumed names: the husband “became” a Dutch army officer who had to hide from the Germans with his wife. This identity permitted them to move around freely rather than staying in the house, but in any case the van Enks prepared a hiding place under the church with the knowledge of the churchwarden, who was a member of the underground. This hiding place was used from time to time when there were searches in the area, which was known for its large number of Jews in hiding. Following one search, Albert van Enk was arrested after being betrayed, and interrogated, but he was released after a week. Albert, whose motives for helping Jews were religious and humanitarian, owned a pharmacy and an arts and crafts shop. He refused to accept money from the Jewish couple, but Mozes Bouwman, whose hobby was photography, opened a photo laboratory in the pharmacy and Albert agreed to keep the proceeds. At the end of July 1944, when Sophia was pregnant, she and Mozes moved to another family, the Linschotens*, who lived in Utrecht.
On November 24, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Albert van Enk and his wife, Willempje van Enk-van Dijk, as Righteous Among the Nations.
