They were put in contact with Susanna van Thiel, also from Amsterdam, who had witnessed the razzias and felt it was her duty to help fight the Nazi regime however she could. Through her work place, she managed to obtain extra food coupons and other documents needed in order to survive. She gave them to the Bolle family to use. Also, from January 1943, she went each month to the den Herder family, where Bep Soesan-Bolle was hiding, to provide her with food coupons. Later, when Bep had to move from this address, Susanna found her a new hiding. In 1942, Susanna declared to the authorities that she had lost her identity card. In reality, she had given it to Reina Bolle-van Adelsbergen, who had shortly before married Hartog Bolle. The document was then forged and given to her sister-in-law, Ilse Bolle-Wijngaard. With this new identity, Susanna was able to find Ilse a family that would employ her as a maid. On June 20, 1943, Ilse used Susannas identity card to escape a major razzia in Amsterdam, following which she and her husband, Simon, immediately went into hiding. Susanna kept in touch with them and continued to provide them with food coupons each month. When they had to leave their hiding place in October that year, Susanna found them a new hideout with the Fikkert* family in Amsterdam. Again, while hidden there Susanna continued to provide them with food coupons and identity papers. She also kept them informed about the other members of the Bolle family and gave them moral support. In all her efforts, Susanna realized that she was risking her own life. However, her dedication to fighting injustice made her act in spite of the possibly fatal consequences. On July 8, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Susanna Clasina Eijkelenboom-van Thiel as Righteous Among the Nations. |
