Jan van Ede, his wife, Everdina, and their two small children lived in Nunspeet, Gelderland. In September 1942, two members of the underground, Theo Stevens* and Lenstra, contacted them and asked if they could hide a Jewish family, the Hamburgers: Isaac, Betje, their son Henri, 13, their two daughters, and the husband of one of the daughters. The van Edes agreed. The van Ede family did everything to make the lives of those they were hiding easier. They gave them the only two rooms in the house for a symbolic sum of twenty guilders a week and they themselves, with their two children, lived in the kitchen. The kitchen and the bathroom were shared by the two families and the Hamburgers prepared their own food. The parents never left their hiding place, but their son, Henri, went out shopping and to find firewood in the nearby woods. Despite the immense overcrowding, Henri remembers the harmony between the two families. The van Ede family was taking an enormous risk hiding Jews. Furthermore, Jan also distributed food cards provided by the underground members Lenstra, Dionysis Bakker*, and his wife, Cornelia (van Rheenen), to other hidden Jews, at great risk to himself. The Hamburger family moved in with the van Ede family in October 1942 and remained there until March 16, 1945, when the Gestapo arrested the daughters and son-in-law. After this, the parents and the son were forced to move to another hiding place until the liberation.
On March 19, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Jan van Ede and his wife, Everdina Hendrika Maria van Ede-Hendriks, as Righteous Among the Nations.
