Before the war, Salli Frankfort befriended Margaretha de Groot. In 1942, on the eve of Salli's deportation, he asked Margaretha to take care of the family of his sister Esther, which she did. Before long, when the deportation of Abraham and Esther Koekoek seemed imminent, they asked Margaretha to look after their children, Sieg and Bertha. After consulting Albert Brinkman, whom she had married six months earlier, Margaretha agreed to help out. In early 1943, Margaretha picked up the children and took them into hiding in her modest apartment. This was risky because the stairwell leading to the apartment was used by many of the residents in the building. In May 1943, Margaretha decided that Sieg was talking too much and felt compelled to move him to Alkmaar (North Holland) to the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Antje and Theo van den Berg*. Sieg stayed with the van den Bergs for the remainder of the war. Bertha remained with Margaretha and Albert until the liberation. They took care of her as if she were their own child and they prepared her for school, without ever asking for financial remuneration.
On March 15, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Albertus Brinkman and his wife, Margaretha Brinkman-de Groot, as Righteous Among the Nations.
